The Bluebird
Every single day for the past two years, I have been giving thanks for the exact same things.
First, my own health. Then, the health of family. Money in the past, present, and future. My colleagues. Every single day, I express my gratitude for all of these. And now. There is the present moment. Things remain as they are. My health, my family’s health. And money. Nothing about my current status has changed. And yet, I am living in happiness. An adult past the midpoint of life has recreated the story of “The Bluebird” in real life. And every single day, I keep writing the continuation of that story.
Speaking of “The Bluebird” – when I read it as a child, I couldn’t make any sense of it; it just felt frustrating. I didn’t understand a single thing about it. A bird caught thinking it was the “Bluebird” would change to a different color, or the moment they realized “Oh, it was in our house all along,” it would fly away. I genuinely thought, “Huh? What is this even trying to say?”
However, through practicing gratitude, I did this in real life. “Wouldn’t I be happier if I had more money?” “Wouldn’t I be happier if those around me showed more affection?” I began to hack those kinds of thoughts little by little through gratitude work. I started counting the things I already have, one by one. And after two years…honestly, my saving haven’t changed at all (lol). But the anxious feeling of “This is all I have” transformed into a sense of relief: “As long as I have this much, I’ll be fine for the foreseeable future, no matter what happens.” Also, I stopped trying so hard to gain love and affection from others, and instead, I became able to act for my own enjoyment. It was a successful hack.
but take a look at the ending of “The Bluebird.” The bird escapes. And Tyltyl says to us, “Please keep searching for it.” Yeah, I get it now. I’ve experienced it so many times over these two years. Even after making a habit of diary gratitude and appreciating what I have, someone’s sudden word or action can disturb my mind, or past deficiencies, resentments, and sadness can suddenly overwhelm me. I feel like I’m about to be swallowed whole. That’s why I do my gratitude work every morning. Saying to myself, “No, no, that’s not what I should be looking at. I need to count the bluebirds.”
To add one more thing about “The Bluebird” – you can never put a bluebird in a cage. You cannot possess it. All I can do is gaze at it and think, “How beautiful.” And there isn’t just one. The more you search, the more you find. They are everywhere. So there is no need to own them. They are always flying around me beautifully, landing on my shoulder, making eye contact, or playing together.
This is my story of what comes after “The Bluebird”.
