How My Relationship with English Is Changing

Since starting English conversation lessons, I feel like the distance between English and me has shrunk a little. The lesson itself is just 25 minutes a week of speaking in English. Though it’s only a small change in my weekly environment, other changes have naturally followed. First, every morning I listen to the listening videos my teacher recommended. Then, I think about what to talk about with my teacher this week. I started doing this during my morning commute from Monday to Friday. Every morning, I spent an hour and a half thinking about English.

Why do I want to be able to use English? Because it’s useful. It allows me to talk to people all over the earth world. It lets me watch, listen to, and read entertainment from around the world. And it means I can communicate my feelings to anyone in the world. It’s just so useful.

In the past, I thought about studying English and tried many times. The only study methods I knew were vocabulary books and grammar textbooks. Of course, I think those are helping my current conversation lessons, but well, it just didn’t last. I couldn’t even keep it up for a month each time. It was more like I’d suddenly remember to do it every two or three years.

However, my study method this time is completely different. I don’t use textbooks at all. I don’t memorize vocabulary. I don’t write. I don’t even look at subtitles. Since I study while driving, all I do is listen and visualize.

In the middle of doing this yesterday, I caught the word “available”. It sounded vaguely familiar, but I didn’t know its exact Japanese translation. Still, I could get the general vibe from the situation. It was a scene about making a dentist appointment. It felt like, “Dr.〇〇 is available”. I figured it had something to do with bookings. But why wasn’t “reserved”? If that’s the case, other hospital appointments besides the dentist must be “available” too, right? What about salon bookings? But aren’t hotel rooms and seats on transportation “reserved”? I guessed that it’s “available” for people and “reserved” for places. And, curious as I am, I haven’t looked it up yet (lol). I thought I’d just memorize it with this feeling and atmosphere intact. I’ll use “available” in this kind of situation. That way, I can save the trouble of translating it into Japanese (lol). Oh, a fresh perspective! My brain started composing English sentences in the car using the words I knew, wanting to share these thoughts with my teacher during Saturday’s lesson.

And today is Saturday, my 8:00 AM Zoom English lesson. I’ll have fun and do my best to express myself again today. I’m looking forward to it.
