Dalmatian Darume Blue
Fun. Inspired by my recent band activities, I pulled out the files from a band I was in 30 years ago.
The band’s name was “Dalmatian Drum Blue,” or “Darume” for short.
It was a duo featuring twin pianos and twin vocals. My partner was a blues pianist who used to play at Nagoya Blue Note. He was also the owner of a small live music venue called Chou Club. When I went to Chou Club to catch a live show, I was instantly captivated by the owner’s piano and voice as he sang Tom Waits songs while playing. I immediately asked him, “Please teach me how to play the piano,” and became his apprentice. What he taught me was how to build chords, the blues scale, and blues chord progressions. Once I learned chords, I started writing my own songs in no time. I found it fascinating how simply making notes lower or higher, longer or shorter, could turn spoken words into a song.
Inside the files were lots of songs I used to play 30 years ago. It’s fun. And terrifying, lol. I used to think I’d never sing in front of other people again, but the thought “Oh, this is kind of fun. Maybe I should do a comeback live show” is growing stronger inside me, lol. There’s the sheet music for “Yuko-san” by the Araiyakushi Vigilante Group. Man, this is scary. Is it a prophecy? But somehow, it’s an amazingly good song. I should have them let me cover this one too. “Nanohana” is great song. “Kaseki Monogatari”, this one could totally sell already, lol.
Now then, what should I do?
