A Happy 3-Day Weekend
Or rather, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays are always my happy days.
First of all, just having days off is a big deal (lol). Plus, Saturday is for English classes. Sunday and Monday are for Aikido and my band. These are all my current interests.
Oh right, I joined thinking it was Aikido, but it actually turned out to be comprehensive self- defense. It’s a self- defense system that incorporates Aikido, Okinawan Karate, and Jujutsu. Today was Jujutsu. It was my first time doing it. Pinning someone down with a lapel hold. It was so interesting! I even managed to pin down a guy who was much bigger than me.
Jo-ha-kyu (introduction, break, rapid completion). I thought it was a term used only for story composition, but it turns out it’s also used in Jujutsu.
First, in the JO (introductory phase), you go for their leg. If it’s dodged, you knock them back with a strike, and use that opening to grab their lapel.
In the Ha (breaking phase), you break their balance and attempt an Uchibari (inner leg reap). If that’s dodged too, you grab one of their arms and perform an Osato Gari (outer leg reap).
In the Kyu (rapid completion phase), you pin the opponent down with a lapel hold after throwing them to the ground.
You perform all of this in one continuous flow.
Gosh, my instructor threw me around so much today! Seriously, it was terrifying (lol). Anyway, his speed is what makes it scary. It happens so fast I don’t even know what’s going on. I desperately held on and made sure to break my fall(ukemi) the moment I was taken down. If I don’t do the break-fall properly, my lower back hurts right away. Even though he’s holding back, the impact from the floor still affects my lower back. Still, watching techniques performed at the instructor’s speed is the most interesting part.
We also practiced how to escape when someone gets on top of you and puts you in a full nelson(pinning your arms). I don’t know if I’ll be able to pull it off in a real emergency, but just knowing the technique gives me hope. I won’t lose my composure. I’ll keep my mind, body, and head focused on escaping. I’m sure my mind will assess the situation. Look for a chance to strike the eyes. Create an opening to slip my arms through. Never give up. Now that I know this technique.
And after practice, it’s music time! Playing instruments and singing are both so much fun. If it goes well, I feel happy and exited; if it doesn’t, well, it’s still fun, interesting, and frustrating. Even the frustration is interesting. Making music with others, blending my sound with theirs – just that alone is amazing. Playing alone is fun, but playing with others is many times more enjoyable!
I have self-defense class today as well. Usually, I stop by after work, so I’m about 30 minutes late, but today is a day off, so I can join right from the beginning. I’m off to enjoy another wonderful time today!
