I Think I’m Learning About Love.
I think I’m learning about love. Right now, this summer (August 2026), I’ve had two major encounters: martial arts and English. I’ve become passionately absorbed in both. And I feel that these two things are teaching me about love.
First of all, there is liking it – a pure sense of being drawn to it. I simply can’t help doing it. It’s fascinating. At this point, it’s just gravity.
And I feel love in the content as well. It feels as though hints about love, which had been a huge mystery in my life until now, are scattered all over the place.
First, regarding martial arts, we practice techniques while caring for our partner’s bodies. We don’t work on techniques with the mindset of trying to beat our opponent. It’s about protecting oneself without hurting the other person. There is flexibility, both in mind and body. That is so beautiful. At the same time, it’s difficult and fascinating. The better someone is, the less they hold back, even against a woman – because they know the exact arts to ensure my body is never broken. Conversely, because I’m a beginner and still clumsy, I can’t stop. I can’t even pull my punches cleanly. I end up hitting them normally lol. Joint locks are even scarier. Even a physically weaker woman, if she executes it right, can break a muscular man’s arm. Not knowing how to control the strength, I’m scared and can’t apply joint locks with senior members who practice with me, through trial and error, and with guidance from my master, I’m slowly checking and learning the forms.
English is also interesting. The nature of the language, the way it’s pronounced, the cultural background that shaped those usages, the history that led to such a culture, and the natural environment – all of these are packed into the language and expressions. Through English, I look at the world, and I can feel a way of thinking unique to English. This is also difficult and yet fascinating. Moreover, it makes the beauty of Japanese – the language I love so much – stand out even more. Is the same true for Japanese, I wonder? A person’s lived life is directly reflected in their words and expressions. In my English lessons, through language, I am being guided to understand a person completely, and to cultivate the desire to truly understand them.
These two things that I am currently passionate about are slowly, happily expanding my world. That is so fascinating and makes me happy. Meeting my martial arts master and my English teacher is a monumental encounter for my future life. From the bottom of my heart, I am grateful for these encounters. Thank you.
Don’t rush. Take it nice and slow. There’s plenty of time. Let’s cherish each and every moment. Let’s think and choose our actions based on love. Let’s keep learning about love.
